An NBA second-half line is a new spread, total or moneyline posted at halftime that counts only the third quarter, the fourth quarter and any overtime. The first-half score plays no part in settlement.

The market opens during the halftime break of each game. Regular-season markets for 2026-27 begin on October 20, 2026, when the Celtics visit the Pistons, according to the NBA's key dates calendar. At halftime a bettor chooses between this line and a full-game live bet, and the two can disagree.

How the number is built

For betting purposes, the halftime score resets to 0-0. "Second half betting essentially resets the score at halftime and the second half is a totally new game," according to BetQL.

DraftKings writes the same principle into its rules. Bets on a quarter or half "refer to the result achieved in the relevant timeframe and do not include any other points tallied from other parts of the event," the DraftKings Market Rules state. Second-half and fourth-quarter markets include overtime by default.

First-half lines are posted before tipoff as roughly half the full-game number. BettingSports.com gives the example of a 6-point favorite with a 200 total, which becomes about a 3-point first-half favorite with a first-half total near 100.

Second-half lines are not a proportional split. They are set live at halftime from the actual first-half result. BettingSports.com and OddsIndex both note that the short break leaves books less time to refine the number than they have before the game.

Maddux Sports reports that the time pressure is greater on nights with many games running at once.

Grading a second-half spread

BetQL's example: Bucks and Raptors are tied 56-56 at halftime. The second-half line is Raptors -4, Bucks +4.

Second-half score: Raptors 58, Bucks 53Raptors -4 covers (won the half by 5)
Second-half score: Raptors 56, Bucks 52Push (won the half by exactly 4)
Second-half score: Raptors 55, Bucks 52Bucks +4 covers (lost the half by 3)
Full-game final in the first row: Raptors 114, Bucks 109Not used for settlement

Only the 3rd quarter, 4th quarter and overtime are counted. According to BetQL, a Raptors -4 bet needs a margin of 5 or more points in the half.

Books also price for the money they expect at halftime. DocSports reports that when a pregame favorite trails at the break, books shade the second-half line toward that favorite to account for public money betting on a comeback.

"The only time we try and book halftimes a little tighter is...we have a game that has runaway action [on favorites]," Rob Gillespie of Bodog sportsbook told DocSports.

Where it shows up

Shading against the trailing favorite. DocSports puts typical movement from the proportional number at about 2 points on second-half spreads and about 3 points on second-half totals. It says totals are set softer than sides.

The underdog record. Second-half underdogs have covered at about 51% in the regular season and about 54% in the playoffs, according to OddsIndex. OddsIndex did not publish the sample size, the seasons covered, or the prices at which those results were measured.

Fatigue and rotations. OddsIndex reports that teams with deeper benches perform better in second halves, especially in blowouts and on back-to-backs. It also notes that first-half foul trouble and reduced starter minutes in lopsided games change second-half scoring.

BettingPros recommends fading teams on the second night of a back-to-back. It reports that oddsmakers often extend the pregame spread without fully pricing first-half injuries or foul trouble.

The middle. Maddux Sports describes a bettor who took a 5-point underdog pregame. If that team leads by 7 at halftime, the opponent becomes a heavy second-half favorite. A second-half bet on the favorite can then create a middle with the original bet.

Not the same as a live spread

Second-half line Full-game live line
Scoring counted 3rd quarter, 4th quarter, overtime only Entire game, including the first half
When posted Once, during the halftime break Continuously from tipoff
Pricing inputs First-half result plus expected halftime money Score, time remaining and game flow

TheLines.com reports that a 10-point favorite can become an underdog within about 15 minutes of play on the live board. A full-game live price carries the current margin. A second-half line does not.

The second-half line is also not a first-half line doubled, since BettingSports.com notes that only the first-half number is a pregame proportional split. The basics of reading a spread are covered in the NBA point spreads primer.

Settlement, voids and the halftime decision

DraftKings requires "the entire relevant period of play" to be completed for half bets to have action "unless the result is already determined," according to its Result Settlement rules. A game halted after the minimum time and not completed within 48 hours settles at the score when play stopped. If the minimum time had not been played, bets are voided.

The same rules let DraftKings void in-play bets accepted at an incorrect price because of delayed or failing live-odds feeds. They also allow voids of bets placed after an outcome had already occurred.

A federal judge in Indiana ruled for DraftKings in September 2026 in McAfee v. DraftKings. The ruling upheld the book's voiding of 140 winning NBA same-game parlay bets placed at erroneous odds, Gambling.com reported. The case involved player props, not second-half lines, but it concerned the same type of void clause.

The sources support three checks at halftime. First, compare the second-half number with the pregame spread halved, to see how far it has been shaded. Second, check rest, bench depth and foul counts. Third, compare prices across books before the market settles, as DocSports and Maddux Sports both advise. Reading momentum once the second half is under way is covered in the wider live betting strategies.
